Markets were broadly off to a good start compared to last week, when the FTSE All-World Asia Pacific index dropped 17.4 per cent to a four-year low, and ended the week less than half its peak value of 1 November 2007.
South Korea gained as much as 4.1 per cent as trading got under way on Monday, Singapore rose 3 per cent, and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was 2.6 per cent higher. The FTSE All-World Asia-Pacific index was up by 1.5 per cent at one stage but gains narrowed to 1.1 per cent by mid morning in Hong Kong.
On the mainland of China, the Shanghai Composite Index lost as much as 2.6 per cent, and Taiwan was down 3 per cent.
