Residents of Polaris Gardens, a luxurious condominium complex in Taipei, are being confronted by growing numbers of people gathering in front of the building, shaking their fists and shouting: “Shame on you!”
The target of their wrath is Chen Shui-bian, Taiwan's former president, who lives on the 12th floor. Mr Chen, his wife, son, brother-in-law and daughter-in-law are being investigated for alleged money-laundering after the former president was forced to admit that his family had amassed $21m (€15m, £12m) in offshore accounts.
The scandal all but shatters hopes that the election of a new government this year would allow Taiwan to move beyond the political infighting and corruption scandals that dominated Mr Chen's eight years in power, and concentrate on economic challenges.
