US president Joe Biden will hit the campaign trail in Florida on Tuesday as Democrats make a last-ditch attempt to win over voters with just one week to go until midterm elections as polls suggest the president’s party is on course for crushing losses.
Midterm elections have historically favoured the party that is not in the White House. But Democrats had grown hopeful over the summer that voter outrage at the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, along with a slate of relatively weak Republican Senate candidates, would boost their chances at the ballot box.
The latest polls, however, suggest that with inflation and a looming recession weighing on voters’ minds, Republicans are on course to take back the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate will come down to a handful of hotly contested races. Democrats currently hold both chambers of Congress by slim margins.
