AI boosts effort to combat long Covid and other fatigue diseases

Scientists hunt biological flags in gut bacteria and immune systems for chronic conditions such as ME
The team examined relationships between gut microorganisms (the microbiome), immune responses and metabolites — substances involved in the chemical processes that sustain life

Scientists have uncovered biological changes in gut bacteria, immune responses and metabolism that are potential flags for notoriously hard-to-diagnose diseases of extreme tiredness such as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and long Covid.

The researchers reported 90 per cent accuracy in identifying cases of ME, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, by using a new artificial intelligence platform to spot markers for the condition from routine lab tests including for blood and stools.
