Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has been plunged into crisis after a Jewish ultra-Orthodox political party quit the ruling coalition in protest against a controversial effort to conscript religious seminary students into the military.
The resignations were announced late on Monday by the seven parliamentarians who make up the United Torah Judaism party, leaving Netanyahu’s coalition with a precarious one-seat majority in the Knesset, or parliament.
It remained unclear whether a second, larger ultra-Orthodox party, Shas, which holds 11 seats, would also follow suit, which would wipe out Netanyahu’s parliamentary majority.
