When he was running for governor of California in 2018, Gavin Newsom declared that whoever won the race would become “the head of the resistance” to Donald Trump’s presidency, thanks to the state’s size, wealth and liberal leanings.
Of course, there was only one person Newsom thought qualified. After he won in a landslide, he quickly threw himself into the job of resister-in-chief, suing the Trump administration more than 100 times.
Trump’s second term has given Newsom even more to fight against. Since returning to the White House, Trump has savaged California’s response to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, challenged its water policies, tried to block its landmark auto emissions regulations and threatened to slash billions in funding for the state’s schools and colleges.
