Argentina’s supreme court has upheld the corruption conviction of former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, triggering a six-year jail term and lifetime political ban for the main opposition leader to President Javier Milei.
The court rejected Kirchner’s appeal of her 2022 conviction for fraudulent administration in the awarding of public works contracts to a friendly businessman during her 2007-15 presidency. An appeals court had upheld the verdict last year.
Kirchner, 72, will probably be allowed to serve her sentence under house arrest because of allowances for over-70s under Argentine law.
