Hamas has released the bodies of four Israeli hostages to the Red Cross, in what is intended to be the final swap in the first phase of a ceasefire that has so far failed to evolve into a lasting truce.
The Palestinian militant group transferred the hostages to the charity early on Thursday local time as Israel began releasing more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, according to news agencies.
The hostages-for-prisoners release was mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the US in an effort to satisfy Israeli demands that Hamas end the public parading of captives, and the coffins of the dead, for propaganda purposes.
