Indian prime minister Narendra Modi will arrive in France on Thursday for a pomp-filled visit aimed at deepening trade and defence ties to counter a rising China, with hopes that at least one big arms deal will be signed.
Soldiers and planes from India’s armed forces will join the Bastille Day parade on Friday featuring Modi as French president Emmanuel Macron’s guest of honour, aiming to highlight India’s status as a prized diplomatic partner.
The pair will discuss the war in Ukraine and rise of China during the two-day trip, a French official said, ahead of September’s G20 leaders’ summit to be hosted by India in New Delhi.
